Because the people involved in charity believe in the young people they work with and believe that they deserve as many opportunities in life as anyone else whatever their background. The team is a real team and there is a culture within the organization of making a difference. There is also a positive energy at all levels of the charity that enables us to take on the challenges that no one else will do.
Why do you think sport is such a good vehicle for developing young people’s lives?
It can assist young people to achieve in an environment they may never have thought possible and at a level they could never have dreamed of. It can enable you to develop friendships and an identity you can feel confident and comfortable with.

Who inspires you?
Apart from all the staff at C4C I would say my dad – he’s reliable, honest, hard working and the life and soul of the party!
Why do you think C4C is so successful?
I think we take on each project and challenge with a positive attitude. We work in areas and with young people that are not easy. Each member of staff pushes themselves to the limit to be the best they can be which ultimately reflects on the change in young people, the change in the charity and the change in the community.
Why do you think sport is such a good vehicle for developing young people’s lives? The nature of sport enables young people to communicate without even realising. Competition, team work, friendships, achievements and improvement help identify what a young person is thinking and capable of. It’s amazing how one session can make a young person feel good or escape from the challenges in their lives.
What are your main strengths?
Being a research geek and evaluating everything I possibly can!
What do you hope to be doing in 5 years time?
Still loving sport as much as I do now, helping young people make positive choices and starting my own family.
What is your favourite quote?
“Don’t dream of winning, train for it.” Mo Farah

What is your favourite C4C moment?
Taking part in the 3 Peaks Challenge fundraiser with some of the team. An amazing 24 hours that I will never forget.
Danny Baker
Training Manager
Who inspires you?
My father is my hero and always has been. He survived a major motor accident and was so strong and persistent with his recovery that he made it easy for me to approach him with any of the problems I faced in life. He told me I can achieve anything I wanted and he never put me down and always told me what I could be rather than bring my faults up. I think this mindset shows in my fun, strong and motivational style of coaching.
Why do you think C4C is so successful?
I think C4C is so successful to date because of two main reasons. One is that we are very much about the young people and the fact that we aim to progress the young people from projects into staff shows we are committed to their development and young people see this. The other is that we never stand still and rest on our laurels. We are looking for the next big thing to work with and with the beginning of Rugby for Change, we will impact on even more lives.
Why do you think sport is such a good vehicle for developing young people’s lives? Sport is such a good vehicle because it brings people together in a fun way. Young people focus a lot on enjoyment and if young people get positive memories through sport, these thoughts will impact on their everyday lives. Also, sport has a unique way of demonstrating key life skills in practical situations. We focus on sport for development and we can get positive messages about trust, accountability, responsibility, communication and staying safe all through the medium of sport which is its unique selling point in my opinion.
What are your main strengths?
I think my main strengths is my ability to make people feel good about themselves and to also make sessions fun and varied. I also keep my work simple and my only two objectives is to make sure everyone has fun and that they come next week.
What do you hope to be doing in 5 years time?
In 5 years time, I would like to think that the charities staffing will have grown with young people from our programmes and that we have done some wonderful work nationally with cricket and rugby. I would also like to think that the international work that is done will be linked together in some way to ensure that they continue to progress well and the ultimate goal would be to have branches of the charity across the world doing amazing work that is relevant to the countries needs.
What is your favourite quote?
My favourite quote is by South African Test Cricket Captain, Graeme Smith. It is a motivational quote for me as it keeps me going no matter how much I have done. The quote is “Nothing is ever enough”, and it is in reference to batting and that he never has enough runs. I link it to that if I am happy with where I am at with work, we will get caught up by other similar organizations and I have to keep striving to keep us on top of the game.
If you could have 3 famous people round for dinner who would they be?
This is always a tough question as it is forever changing but currently I would pick Vinnie Jones as he was my boyhood hero!! I love my football and supported Wimbledon when I was younger and he got a bad press for his commitment but his charity work and caring duties never gets mentioned. He also made the most of his abilities and I can relate to that. I would invite Martine McCutcheon as she is absolutely gorgeous and love her accent and my third choice would have to be Nelson Mandela. I am fascinated with his struggle and his passion and drive to stick to what he believed in. I do my job because I really believe in it and am motivated to help others improve and these three (apart from Martine obviously) sum up my life in some way or another.
What is your favourite way to relax away from work?
I am a big football fan and love playing for my Sunday team and watching my beloved AFC Wimbledon whenever I can. I am also a sportoholic and I will watch almost anything that involves competition. There isn’t a better emotion than competing against another and really getting pushed to your limit in a fun way. I also enjoy cooking (although I am better at the eating) and hanging out with my gorgeous girlfriend!
What is your favourite C4C moment?
I have many favourite moments with the charity as I have been unbelievably lucky to travel the world doing the work I love and have met some wonderful people along the way. I think the first Apprenticeship graduation however will live with me forever. I was lucky to have a wonderful mentor when I was younger and knowing that I have helped others in a similar way to me being helped was very special for me. Knowing that three of that the first batch are full time staff now makes me feel like I contributed to helping another person’s dreams come true. That is a feeling that few get to feel and I am proud to be able to help with this!
