Largest disability cricket tour ever offers London youngsters the chance of a lifetime

Jul 16, 2010

Twenty-six young people from London and the South-East are in Jamaica  playing cricket against West Indian disability teams. Never before has a tour party of this size been assembled for an overseas trip.

Former West Indian fast-bowler Courtney Walsh was among those welcoming the tourists to the island.

Aged between 12 and 20, the group has worked with Croydon-based charity Cricket for Change to raise the money for the trip.

Tour manager and ex-England blind cricketer Andy Dalby-Welsh knows this is something the group will never forget. “This is an opportunity for these young people to have a whole range of really positive new experiences. They’ll benefit from this trip in a variety of ways.”

17 year-old Danielle Garrett, from Sussex has a visual impairment and hemiplegia, which makes one side of her body weaker than the other. “I never thought a game like cricket would be part of my life but getting involved with Cricket for Change has been incredible. Getting this opportunity makes me feel as though anything is possible.”

Another member of the tour party is 18 year-old Ruzivo Kumiwaru. Originally from Zimbabwean he has cerebral palsy and learning difficulties so this was not something he expected to be doing when he arrived in London. “When I got here 6 years ago I didn’t know how things would work out. Cricket for Change has really helped me settle and this trip shows how far I have come since leaving Zimbabwe.”

The tourists will play a series of six 20/20 games against local teams that are organised by the Courtney Walsh Foundation.  The trip will be rounded off with a visit to the British High Commission in Kingston.

The Cricket for Change team left for Jamaica on Monday 19th July and will return on July 30th

Notes to Editors: Press, TV & radio interviews can be set up ahead of the tour. Photos and video footage from the trip can be made available on their return.
