Agony for RCP in MCC fixture

Jun 2, 2011

On Wednesday 1st June, The Refugee Cricket Project were narrowly defeated by 12 runs in the penultimate over in an excellent match against a strong MCC team at The Cricket Centre, Plough Lane in Wallington.

Having won the toss, the MCC kept with tradition and elected to bat on a beautiful day at Cricket for Change's HQ. After a cagey start, the game was brought to life when the RCP picked up MCC's Langmeade for 28 and followed quickly by Casey and Hicks leaving the visitors on 54 for 3 and the game looked to be swinging RCP's way.

Then Mirzas (for the MCC) scored a quick fire 30 just before the lunch interval and took the MCC to 102 for 5 but the RCP still felt that a quick flurry of post lunch wickets would mean they were chasing a low target.

The MCC's Glendenhuys had other ideas however as he bludgeoned a magnificent 67, and took the MCC's score up into the 190's. The RCP opening bowler (and Captain) bowled well, full and straight, and finished with 4 for 35 and was ably assisted by his opening bowling partner (2 for 34) along with the RCP's youngest bowler, whose left arm accurate seamers saw him take 3 very cheap wickets.

The RCP innings couldn’t have started any worse as they were left reeling at 3 for 2. Then two of the more senior RCP lads took the bull by the horns and added a wonderful 105 for the 3rd wicket. This great stand put the game very much back in the balance.

However, wickets sadly fell at regular intervals but at 156 for 5 and with 10 overs to get 54, the outcome of the game was hard to call.

But at 186 for 7 and with 4 overs left, the RCP lost their nerve and the last of the recognized batters was caught on the boundary for a brilliant 24 which meant the last 2 batters needed 22 to win off 3 overs.

Nevertheless, the tailenders scrambled, slogged and edged their way to within 10 before the MCC's Langmeade added to his 3 wickets and the RCP fell just short by 12.

The spin from the MCC's Ireland and Langmeade, did most of the damage taking 7 wickets for little over 100 runs.

Many thanks to the MCC for contributing to such a fantastic match and to all the players for playing the game in such a wonderful spirit. It is very likely the RCP will be working tirelessly in the off season so they can make sure they learn to finish off a similar game situation in 2012.

The RCP play their next fixture at Chigwell School again against The MCC on the 9th June.
